Danny Mills was fuming at the “absolutely shocking” defending as Leeds United conceded their third goal to Middlesbrough in the EFL Cup on Wednesday (14 August).

Having just made five changes at Elland Road, Daniel Farke side saw his team concede a soft goal to Josh Coburn as Boro ran out 3-0 victors in the first-round clash.

Former Leeds defender Mills, working on co-commentary for talkSPORT, didn’t hold back on his assessment of the goal.

“Daniel Farke went and sat straight down in the dugout, I think he’s trying to avoid anything that might be coming his way from the fans,” he said.

“I mean, it’s far too easy, it’s a simple header, no one gets a tackle in, no one gets close, no one defends properly.

“(Jayden) Bogle doesn’t react, who’s just come on, I mean it would be harsh on schoolboys to say it’s schoolboy defending, that is absolutely shocking from Leeds, really, really poor.”

Leeds United need to click into gear

Leeds had one of the most stoic defences in the Championship last season and it was that defensive strength that gave a solid base for the attack to flourish to often devastating effect.

But, in two competitive games this season, the Whites have already conceded six goals – something that will be a huge concern to Daniel Farke and the club’s supporters.
