Not only does Ange Postecoglou have Tottenham flying at the top of the table, the ex-Celtic boss is now in a league of his own down south.
Last night’s 2-0 home win over Fulham means the Aussie has accumulated the most points by a Premier League manager in their first nine games, surpassing Mike Walker and Guus Hiddink. After swapping Glasgow for North London in the summer, Postecoglou has remarkably led Spurs to seven wins in nine games which puts them on 23 points – two ahead of champions Manchester City.
It’s Tottenham’s best start to a season since winning the double back in 1960-61 and Postecoglou’s side are one of only two unbeaten teams in the EPL so far, the other being rivals Arsenal.
The incredible run of form has some fans and pundits dreaming of a first title triumph in 62 years. And while Postecoglou won’t be getting carried away, only eight sides in Premier League history have started the campaign with more points, with four of them going on to become champions, three finishing runners-up and one ending third.
Speaking after Monday night’s victory, Hoops Treble-winner Postecoglou said: “I think I’ve sat here every week and said that we have a long way to go. That doesn’t change. We are nine games in and we’re at the beginning of building something.
“It would be so much easier for me to sit here and say ‘Yeah, we’re a great team’. What I’m saying is we have to improve and that puts the responsibility on me to make sure we do it. We can be better, absolutely we can.
“I was really disappointed with the second half, with the ball we were nowhere near the levels we have been all year. It’s probably the worst 45 minutes we have had with the ball all year.”
