According to Bristol Live, Bristol Rovers brought in free agency striker Chris Martin to practice with Joey Barton’s team.
Bristol Rovers, like all EFL clubs, can sign free agents to make additions outside of the transfer window. The Gas may also look to the free transfer market to improve their ranks, with veteran attacker Martin apparently joining their training sessions.
The 34-year-old left QPR at the end of last season, but rumors over the summer suggested that talks about a possible return were ongoing. Martin was thought to be close to signing a new agreement at Loftus Road as recently as late August.
But now, Bristol Live reports that former Derby County and Bristol City man Martin is bidding to earn a deal with Bristol Rovers.
Martin is based in Bristol, and after the Gas were unable to finalize a late deal for Jonson Clarke-Harris, a free agent striker signing is not out of the question.
A new signing for Bristol Rovers?
Martin has spent the most portion of his career in the Championship, but he also has League One and Two experience. He’s even made five Premier League outings.
During his stint at Rovers’ arch rivals Bristol City, he scored 17 goals and supplied 11 assists in 95 appearances.
During his most recent Championship tenure with QPR, he scored four goals in 16 games in the second part of the season. The most crucial of these came in a 2-1 win over Burnley, which helped the R’s secure their place in the second division.
Time will tell if he can do enough to earn a contract with Bristol Rovers, who are looking to add another body to their offensive ranks outside of the transfer window.
